March 3rd - March 7th
February has already been a busy month in the library! On February 5th, we celebrated World Read Aloud Day. This fun day brought readers, writers, and listeners together to honor the joy of storytelling. Students enjoyed listening to some of their favorite books read aloud to them live by the authors, as well as participating in draw-alongs with the authors and illustrators.
In addition to World Read Aloud Day, we also celebrated the 100th Day of School and Valentine's Day this week. We read books about love, friendship, community and commitment. Students made special handmade valentines and wrote sweet poems for our community housebound seniors.

Quick notes up top! If your child still has their Art portfolio, please have them bring them back to class next week. No worries if it has gone missing. Also, there will be an Art Show hosted by St. Vincent’s Academy on March 3rd from 6-7 pm. I will be emailing families today to notify you if your child will have a piece in this show. Sorry I couldn’t fit everyone. This past week, all of our students have been starting new projects and learning about a couple of ‘new’ artists and their approach to abstract art.
Pre-K is building geometric cardboard sculptures and then sketching their creations. They are natural builders and their drawings are giving them the chance to show us how observant they are not only about the shapes they chose to use, but the abstract colors and patterns that adorn them (the actual geometric shapes were painted in advance by older students).
Kindergarten and 1st Grade are learning about Alma Thomas, a very important African American artist who was a long-time teacher and eventually became a famous painter, notably for her unique approach to mark-making and use of color. They are studying her ‘Space’ series of paintings which are representational of astronauts' journey to space and landing on the moon. Their artworks are inspired by her work and will be colorful depictions of invented or existing planets.
2nd Grade-4th Grade are learning about Wassily Kandinsky, another highly notable abstract artist born in the 19th century who possessed a rare condition known as synesthesia (he could hear colors and see sounds). Students are studying some of his works and implementing his use of line, color, shapes and rhythm.
5th Grade is being introduced to the world of weaving. They are learning about its history and its importance in our lives as consumers and as artisans who still practice this trade as it was made more efficient hundreds of years ago. Students are learning how to set-up their looms with yarn and then are given the opportunity to explore weaving in an abstract fashion by utilizing different patterns, colors, gauge of string, texture, etc.
