We are getting underway in Art by doing a quick review (an introduction for some) on the Elements of Art. What is Art? Where do we see it? And what makes it work? We then focused on one of those elements in detail for our projects… Line. We took a look at how line functions and how important it is to so many things, including shape making, motion implying, form building and a myriad of other characteristics. Pre-K thru 2nd Grade (Primary School) is taking the concept of line and applying it to create self-portraits to practice mark-making and expressing their uniqueness. We looked at some self-portraits done by some prominent figures in the art world including Van Gogh and Frida Kahlo. Since we talked about the importance of Primary Colors in our review, I wanted our Primary School students to use only those central colors in their outfits. In 3rd-5th Grade, we took a look at some examples of contour line drawings and used that same approach to blindly drawing one of our shoes. We started the outline by following the shape of our shoe and then filled in other important lines/details by trying to avoid looking at our paper too much. Afterward, we emphasized our drawing by boldening the lines with marker and then showing form through marks with crayon and colored pencil.
This is an exciting time of year when we fall back into existing routines or develop new ones. As your family navigates going back to school, remember that it’s just as important to build in downtime into your schedule. Allow you and your student to have the time to reflect and rejuvenate!
