Our library has been buzzing with activity! In Pre K and Kindergarten, students have been learning how to care for books with Pete the Cat and Mr. Wiggles. The Shelf Elf showed our 1st graders around the library and shared some of his best library tips with them. Our 2nd graders read Bug Blonsky and his Very Long List of Dont’s by E.S. Redmond and created their own lists of Library DO’s! In 3rd grade, we read The Legend of Rock Paper Scissors by Drew Daywalt. Students loved learning about the origins of one of their favorite games. After completing a Reading Attitude Survey individually, our 4th grade students came together and discussed what reading means to them. We also brainstormed the multiple ways our library can be used as a wonderful resource - from checking out books, studying for a test, making a bookmark, finding a quiet corner to read in, to participating in an after school book club. Lastly, our 5th graders read and discussed the short story, Thank you Ma’am by Langston Hughes. Before our first reading of the story, students discussed how they might teach someone right from wrong. After reading Thank You, Ma’am, students shared what surprised them in the story. Next week, we will use the student’s questions to take directed notes while completing the 2nd reading of Thank You Ma’am and guide our Shared Inquiry Discussion.
Hello! My name is Mr. D’Incau (Dinko). I am new to HDS and have been so excited to meet all of your wonderful children for the first time. To continue kicking-off the school year in LS, we have been collaborating in groups and using some unfamiliar materials to create ‘Exquisite Creatures’. In Kindergarten-2nd grade, we have been playing the game ‘One-Thing-Inside-Another’. It is based on the story The Old Woman Who Swallowed a Fly. Children are working in pairs going back and forth drawing what could have swallowed the thing their partner drew before them. By the end, the page is filled with all types of animals and creatures inside one-another. It’s been a fun imaginative exercise. In PreK, we are going over our alphabet from a book depicting specific items from famous paintings that start with that letter, such as A is for apple. Afterwards, they are experimenting with different materials and mark making on paper.
This is an exciting time of year when we fall back into existing routines or develop new ones. As your family navigates going back to school, remember that it’s just as important to build in downtime into your schedule. Allow you and your student to have the time to reflect and rejuvenate!
