March 11th - March 15th
Happy March!
This week, we had a great all-school assembly! I talked a little bit about our virtue of the month, COURAGE. We defined courage as the ability to do something even though there might be a risk. I pointed out that while many people in our community come to mind and show courage daily, we can do the same. I gave some examples of our very own HDS eagles who demonstrated courage when singing the National Anthem at a flag football game, presenting a project in front of the class, and working hard to learn a new and challenging skill. I asked the children to “Choose Courage” and am looking forward to finding out all of the wonderful, courageous things our students are doing!
Some members from the Hancock Day Middle School National Junior Honors Society presented their service projects to our community. We had two groups of very dedicated and enthusiastic students tell us about their work with the Humane Society and Second Harvest Food Bank. We are looking forward to learning about more of their important community work at our next assembly on April 3rd.
I would like to let you know about a few changes we will have in our Lower School faculty for our 2024-2025 school year. Ashley Moody will be stepping away from the classroom into the role of Instructional Coach. While this role will encompass many facets of life at Hancock Day School, Mrs. Moody’s main focus will be to support teachers by providing them with resources, training, and strategies to best implement our curriculum and meet our students' needs. Susan Hill will be retiring at the end of this school year. Her enthusiasm, dedication, and love for her students have made an incredible impression on our community! However, Michele Hayes, currently our beloved art teacher will be transitioning into the role of Librarian. Mrs. Hayes has a strong background in working in school libraries and is very excited to move back into the position. Danyse Cail will be moving into a new position as a part-time resource teacher. In this position, Mrs. Cail will work with students in small groups in grades K-5 to provide both support and enrichment. At the end of this school year, Justin Creager (PE) and Maia Small (5th grade ELA) have decided to pursue other opportunities outside of Hancock Dacy School. They both have made great contributions to our community and will be missed.
The process of finding new faculty members for next year has already begun. While these individuals are leaving big shoes to fill, I am confident that we will be able to find some amazing educators to welcome into our community! If you have anyone who might be an interested, qualified candidate, encourage her/him to visit our website to fill out an application. We are hiring for the following positions: 1st-grade lead teacher, 5th-grade ELA teacher, Full-time PE teacher, and Lower School Art teacher.
