February 5th - February 9th
Happy February!
Our virtue this month is Empathy. Empathy is a critical skill that promotes individual success in life, but unfortunately, there has been a noticeable decline in empathy in our youth. There are many potential factors identified by researchers: increased use of technology in general, isolating children from others; social media provides a platform for self-promotion and anonymity as well as puts pressure on children to do and be better, and finally, COVID-19 provided little to no opportunity for face to face social interactions which impacted the ability to develop relationships and positive communication skills. Empathy is not something that we are born with. It is a skill that is taught and developed over the course of life. As educators and parents, we are responsible for providing opportunities and guidance for our children to learn about and practice empathy daily.
While empathy goes hand in hand with kindness, respect, and responsibility, it goes deeper than that. Empathy means caring about how others feel, understanding the why behind those feelings, and seeing things from their point of view. Perspective, compassion, and reflection are also important elements of empathy.
At our assembly next week, we will revisit our previous virtues and community service initiatives. We will not have a specific community partner this month; however, our students will engage in read-alouds, discussions, and reflection that will explore and encourage empathy.
Reminder: HDS Baseball tryouts are February 4th. See coach Carucci for more details.

Happy February. I love teaching this month. There are so many celebrations. In Prek this week we read about Groundhog Day and looked at shadows. We also made our own groundhogs to use to see if they saw their shadow. In K we also read about groundhogs. In 1st grade we started getting ready to mummify apples by reading about Ancient Egypt. In 2nd grade we are learning about famous Georgians and building the first squares of Savannah. In 3rd grade we will focus on famous African Americans that changed the world as children. Fourth graders are learning about realistic fiction. Fifth graders are finishing their research on a famous person and getting ready to write their bio poem.
