October 2nd - October 6th

 

The school will conduct a “Lockdown Drill” at the end of this week. Students will have age-appropriate conversations in their classrooms prior to the drill. 

At the Parent Coffee on Friday morning, I mentioned how the faculty at Hancock has been learning about and implementing elements of Conscious Discipline. Another topic I touched on was the importance of parent involvement in monitoring children’s use of technology, especially internet searches, social media, texts, and chat rooms. At this point, technology has become an integral part of our lives and, for our students, an unavoidable and required tool for educational success. It is not reasonable to expect our children to abstain from using technology, so it is our responsibility as adults in their lives to both teach and support them in the proper and safe use of these tools. There are many books and articles out there to provide insight and strategies for supporting children and teens in using technology. Here are a few that I have read and recommend: Growing Up in Public: Coming of Age in a Digital World by Devorah Heitner, The New Childhood: Raising Kids to Thrive in a Connected World by Jordan Shapiro, and Reclaiming Conversation: The Power of Talk in a Digital Age by Sherry Turkle.

Wednesday, Oct 4th - flag football at HDS field at BC

  3rd vs 4th “Bragging Rights” Game at 4 pm

  JV vs SCDS at Morris Field at Daffin Park at 5:30 pm

  Varsity vs SCPS at SCPS at 5:15 pm

Thursday, Oct 5th - volleyball games at HDS

   7th vs SAS  at 7 pm

   8th vs SAS  at 8 pm

Next Tuesday we will have an author and illustrator, Jonathan Miller, visit with our 1st-5th graders.  An order went home this past week if your child would like an autograph copy.  I know your child will enjoy this wonderful experience.  

We have been discussing Mr. Miller’s books during library class this past week.  In PreK we went on a pretend field trip to an apple orchard and played apple games.  In Kindergarten we went to space with Mae Jemison while reading.
