We’ve had a great, busy week at HDS. Last Friday, our 2nd graders placed 2nd in the banner competition for the Georgia Day Parade. While the students were not able to parade downtown (due to expected heavy rain), they walked around the school to show off their amazing art and their great costumes.

Fourth grade began their week with a field trip to the Children’s Theater where they were able to put their performing talents to the test. Valentine’s Day was filled with cheer. Students enjoyed their classroom celebrations and special activities throughout the day! Pre-K celebrated P week which kicked off with Pirates and Princesses. They enjoyed “P” day where they had many fun “P” related activities and, of course, PJ day!

Here is what we’ve been up to!

Building reading comprehension skills in 3rd grade!

Second Graders finished building Johnson Square.  We studied Oglethorpe’s City Plan and then built the square.  They learned and had fun too!!  In PreK we celebrated Valentine’s Day by building “Heart Towers” out of conversation hearts.  Of course, we ate some too!  Third Graders are learning about African Americans that made a difference while they were children.  This week we are reading about Harriet Tubman.  Next week we will be designing and making constellations that could have been used for the Underground Railroad.  Fifth Graders are working diligently on their Dr. Seuss presentations, and Fourth graders are learning to use nonfiction books for their president reports.  Kindergarten is learning about Theodore Roosevelt.  Shh! Next week, I will set up a tent in the library so we can go camping with President Roosevelt and John Muir.  Finally, the First Graders LOVED mummifying apples.  Each week we are checking the progress of the mummification process. ENJOY THE HOLIDAY!!
