October 31st - November 4th
The virtue of the month (for December too) is COMMUNITY. We define community as working together for the good of the whole. I have begun my grade level read aloud sessions to kick off the concept. For grades PK-2, I have/will read Ordinary Mary’s Extraordinary Deed by Emily Pearson. This book tells the story of how one small deed of kindness can turn into many (over 30 billion according to the book…) other acts of kindness that strengthen communities all around you. I have encouraged children to find ways to make an impact in our communities by giving of themselves to help others. We discussed how we are not only a part of our home and school community, but also a part of the Savannah and even world community. I have/will read The House that Jane Built: A Story About Jane Addams by Tanya Lee Stone. This book tells the true story of how Jane Addams bought a house in a run down community and turned it into Hull House, a settlement home that helped change the lives of many people for the better.
Hancock has partnered with Second Harvest this month. We will be collecting non-perishable food at our Fall Fest this weekend and late in the month of November. This is one of the many ways that our school is supporting the greater Savannah community.
Parent Conferences, November 10th and 11th.
November 10th will be a half day, dismissal at 12.
Thanksgiving Feast, Friday, November 18th.
I have not been great this week with taking pictures, but I promise, great things are happening! You can find some great pictures posted on Social Media and on classroom pages!
I enjoyed carpool in my T-Rex costume :)
Library News
Please encourage your child to return books every week. Thanks in advance for your help. This month we are reading nonfiction books in the library. In Pre K we are reading about Veterans Day and Fire Safety Month. In Kindergarten we are reading about the First Americans and examining arrowheads. In 1st grade students are reading about the Mayflower. In 2nd grade we are reading both fiction and nonfiction about tornados. Third graders will be trying to build Wayside School. It is 30 stories high so we will read nonfiction books about building structures. . Fourth graders are reading graphic novels this month. We will also be using the reading strategy of recalling details. Finally, in fifth grade we will look at the cause of World War I in conjunction with Veterans Day. Reading is so much FUN! When your child reads fiction or nonfiction for pleasure, they learn so much!!!
