What Should Quarantine Look Like?
We are all experiencing COVID-19 fatigue at this point, but the diligent efforts of our community continue to keep the vast majority of our students learning on campus each day. If/when your family faces situation that requires quarantine, our school nurses recommend taking the steps outlined below --
If any member of your household is required to quarantine due to COVID-19 exposure, it’s a good rule of thumb to live the next 14 days as if that person is positive for COVID-19. The CDC says that symptoms can appear between 2 and 14 days after exposure to the virus, and we have seen students develop symptoms as late as day 13 of quarantine. COVID-19 positive individuals are contagious before they develop symptoms, so the 14 day quarantine is critical for minimizing the spread of the virus.
Quarantine Frequently Asked Questions
Can the individual in quarantine take a COVID-19 test to shorten the length of their quarantine?
Having the individual in quarantine take a COVID-19 test might give you peace of mind, but remember that testing too early can result in a false negative. The CDC recommends testing either at the onset of symptoms or 7-10 days after exposure. Regardless of the outcome of test results, they do not change the quarantine length.
Can an individual in quarantine continue to share a bedroom with others?
We recommend limiting contact with the individual in quarantine, so when possible avoid sharing bedrooms, bathrooms, foods, and drinks.
If a member of my household is in quarantine, does the whole family have to quarantine as well?
The individual exposed to COVID-19 needs to quarantine, but unless s/he develops symptoms, the rest of the household can usually live normally. Some employers have additional protocol for families with individuals in quarantine, so you may need to research those requirements with your employer.
Can a person in quarantine go to playdates or extracurricular activities if they take place outside?
Individuals in quarantine should limit their contact with others to the greatest extent possible -- be it inside or outside. In person school, playdates, extracurricular activities, eating in a restaurant, going to a store or business, and other outings should all be postponed for two weeks.
